Hello! I am Allen Harkleroad, the publisher of Designer Today. I imagine you are wondering how the Designer Today magazine got started. It all began in late 1999 with a brand new computer, four hundred dollars and a love for graphic design/arts that started what eventually became DesignerToday.com.

In December 1999 an associate of mine provided some free web space on his web server in California. I built a small website and began looking for resources on graphics and design. Being that my previous experience had been in the publishing side of several magazines and also a successful computer related consulting business, I had a thirst for learning and technology. I began to search on various search engines and found that while there were graphics resources out on the Internet, they were spread all over the world wide web. It became a chore to find decent information on what I really wanted to learn about.

I would guess by January 2000 I had a good idea of what I wanted to do, and that was to create a design resource. So the first version was born and we simply called it “The EYE”. I recruited several volunteers and we began by writing reviews of the graphics software we already owned and also wrote tutorials on the same software. We still did not have a domain name for the website, so we registered a couple and began by using the domain the-internet-eye.com (which we still own and point to DesignerToday.com). We updated the name from simply “The EYE” to “The Internet EYE” magazine.

We continued to grow in popularity and The Internet EYE began soliciting software and hardware for review from various companies, and much to my surprise nearly all of them said yes. I was excited about the magazine and we continued to grow, build and change the magazine. In late 2003 we changed the name from The Internet EYE magazine to simply TIEMdesign.com (a.k.a The – Internet – EYE – Magazine – of design).

2004 marks a new era we have moved the magazine off of a homegrown mis-matched layout to a content managed and publishing system that was built by our own programmers using the latest asp.net technology, vb.net and SQL Server. So what you see here today is a new “birth” of the latest version of TIEMdesign now known as Designer Today magazine.
