Canon Digital Rebel XT

Digital Rebel XT

The latest "Pro-sumer" Rebel camera from Canon is a 8.2 megapixel camera with quite a few enhancements over the first Digital Rebel (6.0 mega pixel) that Canon produced a year or so ago. I originally purchased the 6 mega pixel Digital Rebel last year and enjoyed the camera immensely but it lacked several features that at the time were only available in the pro series of camera. I recently purchased the Rebel XT and found the additional features in the camera to be quite nice. Once of the reasons why I like the Rebel series of cameras is that I can swap the lens from my Rebel 35mm film camera with both the Rebel and the Rebel XT, and of course the price range of the Rebel Series.

Out of the box the XT is smaller than the original Digital Rebel and to be honest initially I wasn't too happy with the size of the camera. After using the camera for several days I have become to appreciate the size and weight of the camera. It is indeed compact (for a Digital SLR) and non-burdening to carry around your neck all day.

One of the features of the Rebel XT that I fell in love with is the white-balance settings. The camera has several presets ((Auto, Preset (Daylight, Shade, Cloudy/Twilight/Sunset, Tungsten light, White fluorescent light, Flash), Manual (Custom: read off photo quality gray card or white subject)) as well as a programmable whitespace feature.

The only detraction that I can find is that the Rebel XT uses a new CR2 RAW format that many image editing and processing application do not yet support. However Adobe Photoshop CS2 has a Camera RAW update available for download that can read and write CR2. Also Raw Shooter Essentials 2005 also has CR2 support. I imagine in the next couple of months more applications will provide support for the CR2 RAW format. The included Canon software has no problems with reading the CR2 format. I personally prefer the Adobe Photoshop RAW plug-in (Camera Raw 3.1 update) to work with CR2 files. It is more of a preference of having a familiar application to work with RAW images than anything else.

All-in-all the Rebel XT is a great camera and is perfect for aspiring photographers as well as professionals. I personally enjoy using the camera and look forward to shooting many photos with it.
