Eulda 2007 - European Logo Design Annual Review
Adrienne Turcotte
Eulda 2007 is the second edition of the European Logo Design Annual published by Eulda Books. In the two years since its inception this unique awards scheme has gained international recognition and endorsement by over 65 design associations and schools around the world to date, including the AIGA (the American Institute of Graphic Arts) and UCDA (University and College Designers Association) in the United States, and the GDC (the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada) and SDGQ (Société des Designers Graphiques du Québec) in Canada.
The judging process is designed to mirror the logo design process, in which a designer chooses which concepts to present to their clients, the client chooses the concept to present to the public, and the public then determines if the brand is successful. To imitate this process, Eulda has initiated a 3-tier voting system made up of 10 graphic design professionals, 10 marketing managers and 10 members of the public. As in the logo design process, the designers vote in the first phase, the clients in the second, and the public in the third. The winning logos are chosen based on four factors: clear communication of the message, originality and creativity, good graphic design, and positive overall impression.
To sum up the process, the jurors vote in stages with each person giving each logo a grade (designers rate logos on a scale of 1 to 10; clients and public rate on a scale of 0-5) and each juror selects one logo as their favorite. At the end of each phase, any logo that received a score of 0 from five or more judges is eliminated, and the remaining logos move on to the next round. At the conclusion of the voting, logos are ranked in order of the total score that they received. The "Best of Europe" and the "Best of Nation" are chosen based on this ranking. In case of a tie, the winner is chosen by the number of "juror's favorites" votes received. The final list is approved by all 30 jurors before it is published.
Eulda 07 includes brief biographies for each of the judges, sponsors, and other partners from around the world. It is beautifully designed and nicely printed. Each of the award-winning logos is displayed on its own page along with information about the country of origin, the name of the design firm and the designer(s) who created the mark, the name of the client, and a brief writeup about the design.
With any logo showcase, it is inspiring to see the work being done by today's talented designers, but this publication is also very interesting in that it showcases work from other parts of the world.
As a result of its success to date, Eulda is expanding to "go global" in 2008 with the launch of Wolda, the Worldwide Logo Design Annual. The new format will include new categories for students and young designers, and logo systems (for logos that exist in several different formats), and additionally, all of the winners will be displayed online at www.wolda.org (previously only the "Best of Nation" winners were shown) so that winners will have even greater visibility than before.
I look forward to seeing what is ahead in 2008!
