CorelDRAW WOW! Book - Review

Jed Clampett

February 15, 2000

What a team! Linnea is the editor of the WOW series, Shane has done other Corel books and is responsible for the Q&A FAQ for Corel Magazine, and Sharon is the author of the Illustrator 8 WOW book. Together they really pack a wallop.

In the welcome message you are guaranteed to see things that will amaze and delight you, this review will determine just that. This book is designed so that you can digest small chunks at a time whenever you can take time from your hectic schedule to learn. You'll be putting the WOW! In your work in no time.

There are 5 kinds of information contained in this WOW book.

  • Basic Information on CorelDRAW tools and functions
  • Short tips
  • Step-by-Step
  • Galleries
  • Resources

The CD-ROM includes several versions of CorelDRAW for the Macintosh and Windows so you can determine which one you'd like to use. Some of the artwork that is used is included, some free fonts, stock photos and a tryout of Photoshop 5 along with other tryouts.

While browsing through, I just read a side bar that tells Mac users how to put the effects into the effects menu, and there's a run down on the major differences of each version of CorelDRAW through version 8. The book cover states that this book is version 9 compatible, you are given a CorelDRAW 8 workspace that can be loaded into CorelDRAW 9 to make it look and feel like version 8, you will also find the commands to be in the same place as version 8.

Some of the diverse topics covered are large format; symmetry, surface features, and shimmering colors, cutting holes, modeling space and these represent just a few. There are a lot of examples and step-by-steps not found anywhere else, not to be found in even  Shane's other books.

There is a beautiful section containing pictures of the fountain fill presets and texture fills, making this visual resource a lot easier and convenient to use than looking at each one through the menus.

In conclusion all I can say is - WOW! I'm amazed and delighted! There is so much in here that you are sure get your moneys worth. You'll be reaching for this one often.
