Review of Scanning & Image Correction in Adobe Photoshop 5

Scanning & Color Correction in Adobe Photoshop

By Jed Clampett

April 1, 2000

The first thing you'll notice is that this CD is very easy to navigate and has pleasing visuals. You'll feel as though you are actually in Photoshop and are able to watch and participate in each tutorial.

In the beginning you have the choice of going to the Concept area or the Tutorial section.

Concept:
In the Concept area you'll find printed information with a few QuickTime movies. The part on scanning is very small; it includes how to choose a scanner briefly and how to clean the glass and film. Although the title is scanning and image correction, the focus is on Image correction.

Tutorials:
You are presented with a menu of options. Setup of Photoshop Tutorials on RGB Image Correction Tutorials on CMYK Image Correction Each section has an overview, tools and a quiz to test yourself and your understanding of the material just taught.

In the image correcting section you'll find topics such as selecting the black and white point, determining if the image is high, average or low key, checking neutral colors and adjusting if needed, checking for damage or noise, tonal changes and working with curves and levels. Before you do any correcting you will see how to setup your image by first choosing the paper, ink type and getting a few figures from your printer.

The one thing I'd like to see in future releases would be the images used for correction to be included on the CD for more experimentation.

This CD training is professionally done and highly recommended. The visual instruction helps tremendously in understanding the mystical realm of color correcting. I have been studying and using the Real World Photoshop 5 book (see this months book reviews) which concentrates on image correction.

In conjunction with this CD my understanding increased by leaps and bounds! I'm all for written instructions but when it comes to complex subjects you just can't beat visual aids and this Course meets the bill.
