Ms.
Crumpler takes a unique approach in this guide. She uses color-coded
reference tables (more about this below with a picture). The book
is beautifully illustrated and would be an asset to any serious Artist/Designer.
I found the subjects handled quite well considering the complexity
of the project. Handling 3 major software applications at once is
no easy chore, but Wendy pulls it off with aplomb.
Inside
you'll find 3 major sections:
The
Basics:
You'll look at the basics of each program, Photoshop, Illustrator
and Painter, with highlights of the strengths and weaknesses of each. This
is perfect help for you to decide which program is best suited for the
project on hand.
The
Particulars:
This is where the
side-by-side and in-depth comparison of the major tools, commands,
modes & palettes are discussed. The color-coded reference tables
make it easy to find specific answers to your questions. Reference
numbers on each table make finding more in-depth information easier.

The
Artists:
This section showcases the work of 19 top-notch artists. They describe
their process for producing each piece so you can apply their techniques
to your own work. This section provides you with plenty of inspiration.
This
is not just a bunch of pretty pictures (although there is plenty of
that too). You'll obtain good solid instruction in many areas such
as: layers, masks, channels, color, palettes, textures, gradient,
tracing and the Web. Of course this is just a short list of the many
topics covered. Remember these topics are covered for all 3 programs.
All in all I think this book will make a nice addition to your design
library.
