Four Steps to Using the Camera Map Modifier - 3ds max 4 Tutorial

Jacquelin Vanderwood

The first step in the procedure is applying the CAMERA MAP MODIFIER. In this tutorial we'll keep it simple. Create a SPHERE. Add a CAMERA to the scene.

Select the SPHERE and apply the CAMERA MAP MODIFIER (the one WITHOUT the asterisk) to it. Select PICK CAMERA and click on the camera you will be using.

In step 2 of this procedure, let's put a background into the CAMERA viewport. Select the CAMERA viewport. Turn off the grid and choose VIEWS>VIEWPORT BACKGROUND.

Select FILES and click on a bitmap that you want to use as a background and for the object.

Under ASPECT RATIO select MATCH RENDERING OUTPUT, then go ahead and turn on DISPLAY BACKGROUND. You'll see the map in the viewport.

Onto step 3 where we'll map the object. Open MATERIAL EDITOR. Select the bitmap you used for the background for DIFFUSE. Turn on SHOW MAP IN VIEWPORT.

Highlight the object and apply the DIFFUSE material to the object using ASSIGN MATERIAL TO SELECTION. Go back to the top level in the MATERIAL EDITOR. Make sure GLOSSINESS is 0 and SPECULAR LEVEL is 0. Be sure SELF ILLUMINATION COLOR is off and set it to 100.

Finally in step 4 we'll assign a background to the rendered background. Go to RENDER and select ENVIRONMENT.

Select the button below ENVIRONMENT MAP which will open the MATERIAL/MAP BROWSER. Turn off ROOT ONLY and select the map you are using from the list. Press OK.

Select COPY and click OK.

In the CAMERA viewport, RENDER THE SCENE. At the bottom is the result of using the Camera Map Modifier.
