Begin with a box and make Height, Length, and Width 4 each.
Right-click and select Convert To.
Then choose Convert to Editable Poly.
Change the Top view to Bottom view. With Poly selected, use the Shift key and select two squares on each side.
Lock the selection.
From the left viewport, pull downward. Deselect the lock.
Select all the top boxes. Use the Select and Uniform Scale tool to expand the boxes.
Select the two center boxes on one side and press Extrude. Remember to lock and unlock as you go along. Pull outward. Do the same on the other side.
Unlock. Select the four boxes at the top. Lock.

Select Extrude and pull upward.
Select Extrude again and pull upward a little. Then select Bevel.
Bevel up and out. Bevel again and inward.
Select all.
Click MSmooth.
Click MSmooth twice more. This continues to double the polygons each time to make the character smoother. Now you're ready to apply texture and bones to the piece.
