Here we have a ball we want to animate.

The first step we need to take is to turn on Set Key.
Select the object to be animated and right-click. Choose Curve Editor.
Now click on Show Keyable.
The red key means the track will now be keyed.
Clicking on the key will specify which track not to animate.
Now press Key Filters button to specify what
Check which tracks you want to keyframe.
Let's turn off Rotation and Scale.
With the ball selected move to the frame you want to set a keyframe at.
Move the ball and then click on the key to set a keyframe.
You can see a keyframe has been set.
If you need to move an object in time without updating it, first begin by turning on Set Key. Move to a new frame. Move or pose the object. Right-click over the timeslider and drag. When you have moved the object into it's new position, click on Set Key again.
