Animating Using the Bulge Filter - Adobe After Effects Tutorial
Jacquelin Vanderwood

April 1, 2004

Using the Bulge filter is easy to do. I'll use a dog's paw for this demonstration. Begin by having the artwork or layer selected. Now choose Effect and Distort then select Bulge.

Immediately you'll see the dog's paw is encircled and becomes distorted in the default mode.

By adjusting the Horizontal Radius to a higher value, the dog's paw widens.

Adjusting the Vertical Radius to a higher value distorts the paw vertically.

Bulge Center allows you to pick the center of the bulge.

Bulge Height changes the depth of the bulge.

Taper Radius set to 0 gives you the default bulge while resetting the radius higher pulls the bulge inward.

You have the option of using a High or Low Antialiasing. If the work will be used for broadcast it is advised to use High.

Pinning keeps the outer edge of the piece at the normal size while allowing you to animate the interior.

Now that you've tried all of the above features of Bulge, hit Reset and let's begin the animation. Select Bulge Center and set the center to the right of the piece. Click on the stopwatch. Hit the U key twice to open the layer in the timeline.

Move to keyframe 2. Set a keyframe here by putting a checkmark.

Now move the center to the left side. Hit Home and press the spacebar to see the animation.

Hit the Home key. Select Horizontal Radius, click on the stopwatch and set to 95. Select Vertical Radius, click on the stopwatch and set to 64. Hit the U key twice to open up these options in the timeline. Go to keyframe 2. Put a check in each box to set keyframes. Set Horizontal Radius to 0 and Vertical Radius to 440. Set a keyframe at the beginning for Bulge Height.

Set Bulge Height keyframe 2 to 1.

Select the 4 first keyframes and copy. Go to keyframe 4 and paste. Hit Home and spacebar to view the animation.

After running the animation I noticed a jump in the middle of the animation so I reset the Horizontal Radius to 87.5 to rid the animation of the defect.
