Filmstrip File - Adobe After Effects Tutorial
Jacquelin Vanderwood

April 15, 2004

1 We've created a movie but we want to add some effects to it. How do we do that in After Effects?

2 The first thing we need to do is have our movie open. Then choose Composition and Make Movie.

3 Name the file and make sure it's somewhere you can easily find it.

4 The Render Queue screen opens up.

5 Select Filmstrip from the Format dropdown menu.

6 Make sure to specify all the options you want selected and then press Render.

7 Go ahead and open the filmstrip in Photoshop. You'll notice it will take some time to do so. The filmstrip will look rather odd the first time you see it so be aware you'll need to use the zoom feature to get a better look.

8 Each filmstrip frame is the size of the original unless otherwise specified at the time of rendering. At the bottom of each frame you'll find the keyframe number.

9 You can at this point add in the details you want in the individual frames. When you are done hit Save and notice at the bottom of the screen that the file is saving filmstrip format.

10 Create a new composition and open the .flm file we just worked on. Drop the file onto the timeline and press the spacebar to watch the changes. I placed some stars in the exhaust near the beginning for this demonstration but you can actually do a lot more complicated effects.

11 Using the filmstrip method to enhance special effects is an exciting and potent feature.
