I've created a composition in Photoshop and then imported the artwork into After Effects to demonstrate Shatter. There are two layers: the background layer and the heart layer. I have locked the background layer so that it won't interfere with the heart layer.
With the heart layer selected I then open up Effect and select Simulation and then choose Shatter.
Here we see the Shatter dialogue box. Click on the box by View.
Change it to Rendered so you can see better what the effect of Shatter will be. To work on the Shatter effects it's better to use Wireframe to see the progress.
Next we need to tell it to render All.

For Shape let's select a pattern of Glass. To see the pattern, change View back to Wireframe for this procedure.
Set Extrusion Depth to 3.90.
Set a Rotation Speed of .63.
Set Viscosity to .70 and Gravity to 30.
Press the spacebar and watch the animation.
