Let's start out with a single image on it's separate layer. After Effects has applied the black background as seen below.
With the image or layer selected, open Effects and select Simulation and then CC Ball Action.
Immediately we see that the image has become a series of balls of varying sizes.
Here we can see the CC Ball Action menu that is available.
Let's start by changing the Ball Size to 50. Look at how the image has changed. It somewhat looks like a grid you'd see at a sport game.
Leaving the image as it is, let's look at the Rotation Axis. We can see nine varieties of choices we can apply to the image. Let's keep on X Axis for the time being.
Notice when I set the Rotation to 35 degrees how the image turns in 3D space.
Here we have the Twist Property drop down selection menu.
Let's set the Twist Angle to 1 to see what happens.
We can see that the image is actually twisting around on itself.
Here we have it set to Radius.
Let's hit the Reset. Try setting Grid Spacing to 3 and see the results.
Here it's set to 16.
If you want to use Scatter in the animation, try using different settings. Here I've set the Scatter to 9.
Finally, we can set Scatter to a high number and watch the explosion.
