In this tutorial I'll show you how to manipulate gradients on objects.
Let's start by applying a gradient using the Shape toolbar Fill option.

I've created a circle filled with a gradient.

Next I select it, then hold down the Control key and click on it. We find that by doing that step that there are manipulators for the gradient.

If you pull on the outer most circle of the manipulator, we can change the size of the gradient.

If we move the center point and drag, we can manipulate where the center of the gradient falls.

The whole manipulator can be moved off of the object to create a different effect.

You can then animate the gradient by choosing a start point, an end point and changes to the gradient.

You could literally animate a planet's colors and mood with this option plus use on a number of other ideas you might have.
