Paper Dolls - Adobe Illustrator Tutorial

Jacquelin Vanderwood

Begin with the head. Create a circle with the Ellipse tool.

Selected the Rounded Rectangle tool and create a neck.

Select both. Click on Shape Modes and press Add to shape area.

Create an oval for the body.

Select Shell Upper at 10% for the body. Apply Expand Appearance. Combine using Add to shape area. Press Expand.

To create the arm first start with a circle. Add a rectangle. Copy the circle and drag down to the end for the hand. Combine using Add to shape area.

Reduce the width if necessary and duplicate.

Select the Rotate tool and select an angle for the left arm of -280. Do the opposite for the other arm. Create a leg with the rectangle tool. Add a circle and you know the rest.

Select all and apply Add to shape area.

Create by using two circles, black. Add a white dot to the eye. Create some rosy cheeks with circles, no stroke. Create the nose with the Pen tool, a black stroke of 6 pts., and Rounded Cap and Join. Select the Line Segment tool and draw a straight line for the mouth. Open Warp Options and apply Arc -42 (Bend).

Create little circles for the fingers.

Create a new layer. Lock the doll layer. For a girl create some ponytails using the Pen tool and then using Reflecting and Copy. For the boy use the technique of the Line Segment tool, the Warp Options, use the Pen tool to connect the two endpoints, and increase the stroke size to fit.

For the girl: on a new layer draw half of a dress with the Pen tool. Create flaps with the Rounded Rectangle tool. Rotate slightly and duplicate. Set into place. Add decoration to the dress. After duplicating, use the Add to shape area to combine only the dress and not the decorations. To print it, hide the dress layer, print the doll, come back, hide the doll layer and print the dress. You are now ready to play paper dolls. You may want to consider printing the paper doll on cardboard paper for sturdiness.

Go and do the same for the boys clothes.
