Draw a Snowman - Adobe Illustrator Tutorial

Jacquelin Vanderwood

November 15, 2003

1 To make the snowman, we want to start with three circles of varying sizes as shown below, and filled with a circular gradient of white and light blue.

2 Next we want to select all the circles and apply Roughen with a size of 5%, detail of 1/in, and smooth points.

3 The Roughen filter will give the snowman a more realistic look.

4 To make the eyes, we use a black circle and a white circle without a stroke. Group them.

Select both the triangle and the eye pieces.

5 Select the Divide option from the Pathfinder palette.

Use the Direct Select tool to delete the pieces of the eye.

Now duplicate the eye by Alt+dragging.

6 Add a stroke to each eye.

7 Use the Pen tool to create the nose.

Create a highlight for the nose.

8 With the nose and highlight selected, group them.

Apply a Roughen filter to the nose following the specifics below.

9 To form the mouth, begin by pressing D to bring the default colors back and then make the foreground color transparent by hitting the / key. Use a stroke weight of 6 pts and use rounded cap and join.

10 With the same tool, create the rim of the hat with a straight line.

To develop the top of the hat, use a circle and then use the Scissor tool and cut on the line. Add a highlight.

11 With an 8 pt stroke and the Pen tool, draw the arms. Send the left arm to the back.

12 To create the buttons, use the Circular tool and create a medium green button with a 2 pt stroke then duplicate it and paste in front. Scale down the size and change the color. Group.

Use the Zig Zag option with the settings below to achieve an interesting button.

Duplicate the button.

13 Add a shadow on the ground with the Pen tool. Send it to the back. Feather the shadow.

To add snow, draw a circle, use the Zig Zag option again with the settings below.

14 Duplicate the snowflakes and scale to various sizes.

Your snowman should look like the one below.
