Freehand Drawing Portrait of Bob Hope - Adobe Illustrator Tutorial

Jacquelin Vanderwood June 1, 2004   1 The first thing I do is paste a picture of Bob Hope into Illustrator.  2 Because the photo is grayscale, using a bright color stroke to draw with will enable me to see what I am doing.   3 I'll use the Brush Tool.   4 Create a new layer and lock the photo layer.   5 Open Calligraphic brushes. Select 1 pt. Oval.   6 Double click on the Brush Tool and set the Tolerances to 2 pixels, the Smoothness to 4 percent. Press OK.   7 Start by drawing the nose.   8 Now draw the forehead. If you drop the line or want to continue using a line, click on it and continue drawing.   9 Continue drawing as I have done below.   10 Continue drawing until you are finished. To make adjustments to lines, use the Direct Selection Tool and select individual points. Delete the photo layer.   11 Using the Pen Tool, drawing a medium gray shape as the one below. Make it an Art Brush with Hue Shift selected.   12 Change the stroke color to black. Apply the new brush to the sketch. Hide the photo layer. At this point if you see a stroke you don't like, delete it and redraw it with the photo layer in view. I did this with eyebrow because I didn't like the thickness of the first one.   13 Use the Scissors Tool to cut thick lines. I've done this with the nose.
