Creating a Grunge Brush - Adobe Illustrator Tutorial
Jacquelin Vanderwood

August 1, 2004

To create a grunge-type brush, let's start with rectangle created with the Rectangle brush.

With the rectangle selected, open Warp Options and select Fish. Follow the settings in the dialogue box below.

Here's the result so far.

Now select Expand Appearance to make the warp permanent.

Again, open Warp Options and select Bulge. Make sure the rectangle is still selected. Follow the settings below.

Here's what we have now. Use Expand Appearance again.

Hit Control+H so that you can better see what your results will be. Open Warp Options again and this time select Wave.

As you can see, the look is becoming more grunge-type. Expand Appearance.

Now select the Warp Option Squeeze. Follow the settings.

Let's make a brush out of this.

With Brushes open, click on the corner arrow and select New Brush.

Select New Art Brush.

When the Art Brush Options dialogue box appears, name the brush Grunge.

Keep the Direction the same.

Make the change to Size by specifying Proportional. Also check Flip Along. Press OK.

You should now be able to see the Grunge brush in the Brushes palette. Select it and the Paintbrush tool.

Use the brush and write out numbers to see it's grunge style.

Here's an example used in drawing a caricature.

Let's try out the brush on actual text. Type out something using for instance Caslon Antique.

Here's the text as typed. Convert the text to Outlines.

With the text selected, apply the brush to it. Change fonts and do the

I've used the Grunge brush here and painted four lines, selected them all and reduced them vertically. I then went ahead and made a second brush with the same parameters.

Here's the result of that brush.
