Begin by creating a vertical ruler line. Using the Pen tool draw out the shape of a tree and right-click on the piece. Select Make Guides.
Draw two lines as shown below.
Using the Pen tool, draw out the shape of half of a tree.
Using the Reflect tool, make a copy and move into place.
If the top and bottom points do not meet, select two opposing points and choose Control-J to join. Press Control+; to hide the guides.
At this point I noticed that the two bottom branches were way out there so I selected one point on the left and used the arrow keys to bring it in about 12 clicks and did the same for the other side.

Create two squares side by side.
With both squares selected, choose Define Pattern to make a pattern.
With the tree selected, click on the fill square that contains the pattern..
To adjust the pattern use the arrow keys. Notice how the pattern changes within the tree.
Select Expand and check Fill to make permanent.

To create the tree, print out four copies. Cut each copy out. Fold each one in half. Glue the backs, half to one copy and half to another copy. The example below show the progression from the top view. The tree will stand on it's own. These are great for table settings and tree decorations.
