For this lesson I'll start with two boxes. The step is to group both items together by pressing Control+G. Then let's take off the stroke and change the color.

In this step we select Effect and choose 3D. From the 3D menu let's select Extrude & Bevel.
When the 3D dialog box appears, the first thing to do if you have enough memory is to check Preview.
Now we can see live what we are doing.

If we drag inside the box area shown, notice how it moves and updates the object live.
To understand the procedure better, hovering over an edge as shown below, notice how it turns red. This indicates the X axis. If you look to the side you'll notice an icon in red which represents the axis and shows you how it turns.
Here is the Y axis in green.
And here is the Z axis in blue. If you change the numbers in any one of these box to the right, you'll change the axis of the box.
We can also change the perspective of the item by typing in values in the Perspective box.
We can also change the Extrude Depth in the Extrude & Bevel box.
Another option provided is the option to cap or not to cap the artwork. So far we've seen the artwork capped but below we can see that basically the stroke of the item shows through and there is no fill. This is achieved by turning off the cap.
