Here's the little cartoon I drew in Illustrator and it's the one I'll use for this lesson. I basically created a rectangle and used the Knife Tool to create most of the scene.
Next I selected everything and chose the Live Paint Bucket Tool.
I made sure the drawing had a white fill and then I created a brown filled rectangle for and sent it to the back for a frame. From there I selected the Live Paint Bucket Tool and filled the different portions of the drawing.
I then chose to Expand the drawing so that I could carry out the texturing of the colors.
Making sure the Appearance Palette was visible, I selected the cactus.
Next I chose Patterns.
Now I selected the Basic Graphics Dots from Basic Graphics.
Here we can see the different patterns available under Dots.
It's important to create a new Fill layer from the Appearance Palette for this to work. In this way you will preserve your original color while adding a design to the color. Now select a dot pattern from the available dots.
So here we have the polka dotted cactus in it's original color.
So following the same procedure, you also open up the Basic Graphic Lines patterns as well and begin to create an interesting piece of art.
