Cropping Artwork and Setting Crop Marks - Illustrator CS2 Tutorial
Jacquelin Vanderwood

August 2006

For purposes of this lesson, let's say that the artwork below will be used in a book and it's proportions don't fit the designated area. How do we make it fit? Are we allowed to trim down the artwork?

If we open Print and choose Setup, under the dropdown box Crop Artwork t we can see that we have three options to choose from. The first option is Artboard. If the artwork expands outside of the artboard, the artwork will be cropped to the edge of the artboard at the time of printing. If we choose Artwork Bounding Box, anything within the bounding box will be printed.

If we have chosen to select an area for cropping and we choose Crop Area, then only that selection will be printed.

To set an area with crop marks, we must first designate that area with a rectangle.

With the rectangle selected, open Crop Area and Make.

If we look closely we can see the crop marks we just set using the Crop Area and Make command. When you go to print this and choose Crop Area, only this cropped selection will print.

If our artwork extends beyond the artboard, we would then choose to print to the Artboard. If we want to print the whole picture and we have it grouped let's say and the there is a bounding box around the whole piece, we would then choose Artwork Bounding Box and the printer would reduce the picture to fit within the artboard space.

To set crop marks around a certain area within the graphic, we select the items, and open Filter>Create>Crop Marks.
