So the first thing we do is create a rectangle and duplicate several times then change the colors randomly. Next select all and duplicate again and rotate.
Group the rectangles and move into to position scaling as necessary. Change the transparency mode to Darken.
Create a circle and cut at the top and bottom. Delete one-half. Make the stroke white.
Drop the checkerboard pattern onto Symbols.
Apply 3D Revolve to the half circle with a custom rotation.
Change the lighting settings to brighten up the circle.
Select Map Art. The ball will look like the one below.
Choose the symbol we just made and select the surface and in this case it is 1 of 2. Adjust the points to cover the whole area of the ball.
The ball will look like this. If you want to duplicate, make a copy and move it. To change it's look, click on 3D Revolve (Mapped) in the Appearance palette to open it up and make the changes.
