In this tutorial I'll show you how to create bricks.
Start by having the grid turned on and Snap to Grid selected. Use the Rectangle tool to draw in a rectangle.

Now duplicate the first rectangle to the right. Then do the same by pulling the one for the middle down. Duplicate the lower middle one to the right and scale it to the right and duplicate it.

Create the background.

Apply a drop shadow to the bricks as shown below.

Drag the whole design onto the Swatches palette.

Darken the background with another color and drag that onto the Swatches palette. Do it a third time so that you have three versions of the bricks in the Swatches palette.

Using rectangles and Pathfinder, build a fireplace and apply the first brick swatch.

Create another rectangle and apply the second swatch.

Use the Expand option now. Do this twice.

Use Free Distort to change the perspective on the piece.

Scale the piece making it narrow as you see here. Duplicate it and reverse it.

Follow the same procedure for the roof of the fireplace.

Reduce it's size.

Do the same for the back and reduce it's size. Use the darkest swatch pattern as we did for the roof.

That's one way to make bricks.
