In this tutorial I will show you an interesting and easy way to simulate a faux 3D background. Tutorial Includes project files.
To start out I made a rectangle. Next I created three different sized circles and used the Alt key to duplicate them.

Under Shapes Modes and with everything select, I chose Subtract from shape area.

Next, Alt-drag to duplicate and move off to the top. This will be our spare.

With the first rectangle selected, open Stylize and choose Inner Glow.

Let's set it to Center with a Blur of .26.

Drag a copy of the one above and move sideways in conjunction with the first one. Change it's color somewhat.

Apply the same Inner Glow to it.

Let's do the same thing again remembering to change the color slightly and apply Inner Glow.

Do it one more time and this time rotate 180 degrees.

Create another rectangle and fill with black. Send it to the back.

For the second to the top circle pattern apply a Drop Shadow with a 50% opacity. For the top circle pattern apply a Drop Shadow with a 25% opacity.

Create a smaller flat colored rectangle on top.

Select all of the rectangles and select Clipping Mask.

The background should now look like the one below.
