In this tutorial I'll show you how easy it is to create an irregular pattern.
We start with a square which then is converted to a guide using Control+5.

We also want to make sure that Snap to Point is checked.

Draw the square that will be the bounding box then draw what you want to on the edge. Select everything.

Alt+drag right to copy. Make sure it snaps.

Now delete the right square.

Again follow the same process for the top and Alt+drag down to copy making sure it snaps into place. Then delete the lower rectangle.

Delete the bottom square.

Fill in the square with the rest of the design.

Use Pathfinder to break the piece apart so that you can delete the outer sections.

Now define this as a pattern.

Now you should have a perfect pattern.
