In this tutorial I'll show you some ways to make photos interesting.
Place a photo into Illustrator and reduce it if necessary. Copy it and paste it to make two new layers.

Apply the default Tracing Options but change the Threshold amount for the top layer. Choose Expand Appearance. Select a white area with the Direct Selection tool, then go to Select>Same>Fill Color to select the white area, and then hit the Delete key. Lock and hide that layer. Make the second layer visible and select the meatball for the second layer.

Open the Skin swatches. Click on Tracing Options and make the Mode Color and the Palette Skintones.

Open up the swatches palette Kid Stuff. Meatball the third layer and choose Tracing Options. For Palette choose Kids Stuff. Make sure Color is selected for Mode.

For the second layer, choose the Difference layer mode and the layer Opacity set to 50%. For the top layer choose a turquoise color as a fill. Set the Opacity to 50%. Duplicate this layer and remove the fill. Apply a white stroke to the layer. Change the layer mode to Color Dodge with an opacity of 50%. Finally, create a 5th layer and create a rectangle to cover the entire piece. Fill that layer with dark brown. Change layer mode to Overlay. Then apply Scribble, found in Effects>Stylize, to the layer and use the Sharp default settings. That's it!
