To create a new library, you would start with File and then select New and you'll be given three options to choose from.

For me I have first created a File that contains all libraries from all software packages, then created an InDesign library followed by an individual library named Shapes. This method can keep everything organized and easy to find.
So here is the new shape library with nothing in it.

Here I've created a square and then dropped it onto the library. Then I double clicked the library item and up pops the Item Information dialogue box. I named the item and left the Object Type to Geometry.
Here you can see I created three objects and dropped them into the library.
Let's say I've got quite a number of items on the page and want to add them to the library.
We can instruct through the library arrow either to specify Add Items on Page and/or Add Items on Page as Separate Objects.
So if we choose the first option which is Add Items on Page, we get a library item containing all objects on the page.
However, if we choose the second option of Add Items on Page as Separate Objects, the program will automatically create separate graphic objects for us.
If you've created so many items in a piece and the library is quite extensive, by clicking on the binoculars this dialogue box will pop up and you can search through the library to find the items quickly. For instance, this would be real handy if you have a catalogue set up for print and you need a specific piece to use.
