In this lesson we'll make a recipe card using 1/2 letter size cardstock paper and learn how to fix a graphic that's been placed. Tutorial Includes project files.
Let's begin with a Letter - Half page size in landscape mode.

Then select the Rectangle Frame tool.

Create a box 15 by 15 for width and height.

Set that frame in the upper right corner.

Then select Place to import the graphic into the frame.

In this instance the graphic is apples.tif.

You can now see the graphic in the area that the frame had been but it needs to be fixed.

So with the graphic still selected, open Fitting and choose Fit Content to Frame.

Automatically the graphic is reduced to the size of the square that it is inhabiting.

Click on the Layer Options palette and select the layer with the graphic and name it apples.

Lock that layer.

Create a new layer and name it Title.

To create a new character style, open the Character Styles palette and click on the arrow.

Select New Character Style.

Name the style recipe title.

Click on Basic Character Formats.

Set the parameters as shown below. If we don't like what we see we can always open the style and fix it.

Under Character Color double-click on the foreground color box.

Name the new color apple green and change it's Color Type to Spot. Set the CYMK percentages as they are below and click on Add.

Now go down and select that color.

The Tint is the varying amount of the color that we can choose to use instead of creating another color. It's important to keep your colors to a minimum and using Tint is the way to do it. So if you want a lighter apple green color, just change the tint. We'll be using 100% of the color.

I typed the title of the recipe cards and decided it needed to be bigger so I double-clicked on the style and changed the font size to 30.

I used the Pen tool to create a line for the title which will be handwritten for each recipe. Then I set the parameters for the line.

I the created lines for the body of the recipe using the Pen tool and holding my shift key down, then pressing the Alt key and duplicated the line. When they were all duplicated, I selected the Direct Selection tool and grabbed the right-side end points for the lines that would be longer, held the Shift key down and dragged right. With the Selection tool I grabbed all of the lines and opened the Align dialogue box and chose Distribute Vertical Spacing located under Options.

The cards will look like the finished piece below. It is important to run Separations at this point and that subject will be covered in another tutorial.

Then run Preflight and select Show Problems Only to find out if you have any problem areas, click report for a hard copy print out, hit Package, fill out the information, hit Package. Make sure that these items are checked. You'll get a font alert, press OK after reading it.
