In this tutorial I'll show you as much as I can about Toon shaders and what you can do with them.
If you click on the Toon tab, all of the selections appear.

The first shader is called Solid Color.

If we take a look at the Attribute Editor we can see that we have limited choices as to what we can apply to the geometry.

If you click in the color swatch, you can make a new choice for color.

We can change the way the shader looks by adjusting the selections and changing colors.

If you follow the settings above, the shader would appear as it does below. You can make the shader object transparent, give it a glow, etc.

Then we can assign it a material and have amazing results. I clicked the button for Out of Color and chose the Checkerboard pattern.

Let's click on the Edit Perspective Background Color button.

We can then go and change the background color.

Let's click on the next Toon shader which is Light Angle Two Tone. As you can see there are two colors to work with here.

In the Attribute Editor under Color select the arrow button.

Here we can make changes to the shader.

Click on the little dots at the top then click on the Selected Color swatch to change the color. To smooth out the color and make it more of a gradient, choose Smooth under Interpolation.

If you click on the little checkerboard button, you can then add a desired texture to the piece.

There are a variety of methods to achieve interesting results in Toon Shaders. I've barely scratched the surface with this tutorial.
