In this tutorial I'll show you how to create an emitter for fluid.
Start by creating a plane. You can add color to it in the Hypershade. I selected a Blinn and changed the color.

Change to Dynamics.

Select Fluid Effects>Create 2D Container with Emitter.

Move the emitter up. Hit the number 6 to view in smooth shaded mode.

Make sure in Preferences that you have playback speed set to play every frame.

Hit the rewind button and play the animation.

Let's move the emitter down again and create some geometry to set within the emitter.

Select the geometry and shift+select the emitter. Go into Fluid Effects and choose Make Collide.

Play the animation again. You should see the fluid break up this time when it collides with the geometry.
