In this tutorial I'll walk you through the process of creating ambient occlusion which means the blocking of light.
Here's the scene we'll be working with.

Go to Hypershade, right-click on the arrow and select Create mental ray Nodes. Under Textures choose mib_amb_occlusion.

Make sure you have a Lambert created then middle-click and drag and drop the mib_amb_occlusion onto it.

Change the color of the Lambert to white.

Apply this shader to all of the geometry and render the scene using mental ray.

To improve the scene change the occlusion Samples to 64.

Render the scene again and see the improvement in the quality. Remember, there are no lights being used in this scene.
