Logo Selection - Tutorial

Jacquelin Vanderwood

1 A logo is a symbol, a trademark of a company, or a name. Logos represent a large variety of businesses and/or people and products or ideas. Choosing the right design is extremely important to your success. Logos can contain text or text and symbols. They will convey your company's image. The logo is a selling point for your company and is a visual reminder to people. It should represent the goals of the company. It can also represent a brand name. Logos are used in a variety of ways for a variety of purposes.

Designing your own logo can be challenging. How do you decide what to use?

Text logos are words created in a variety of fonts and sizes that will convey an image or impression to your client. The type of font used should determine the item or company and it's style. If you are selling Victorian silverware, a good type of font would should be very fancy and elegant. If you're putting it on a box of donuts, a more easily read font will work.

2 There are also symbol logos which contain an actual representation of your company or product. This is a more direct conveyance of your companies intentions. It tells more about the item or company. It could represent the actual name in it's graphics. For instance, if the companies name is Star Tronics, the graphics can contain a star(s). Or you may just create a whole new brand name that can potentially become a household word.

3 The third option is text and graphics. If your goal is to represent the company or product in more detail, using this type of logo will definately aid in it's selling point.

4 Depending on the type of business, color would need to be considered. If the the company is conservative, keep the colors conservative as well.

5 Keep it simple. The simpler the better. Keep in mind the logo will be used by various people in a variety of ways and may need to be recolored or used on a web site, any number of ways.

6 Your logo needs to be unique and recognizable. It should remind people immediately of you. If need be create your own fonts to use. Individuality is the key. Besides, you do not want copyright infringement at all. The goal is for people to associate your logo with you.
