Columns with Bevel - Lightwave 3D Modeller Tutorial
Vikki Olds

February 15, 2004

1 We're going to construct a simple column to help us learn to use the Bevel tool in Lightwave 3D Modeller.

You will need to have at least a top and front view open.

To start with we need to create a column. On the Create tab click on Disc.

Hold down the Ctrl key and drag with your mouse in the top view to get a good size circle. Using the cross-hairs in the circle drag the cross-hairs so that it aligns in the center of the top view.

Click anywhere above the disc in the front view to expand the column upwards. Drag the bottom down until you fill the front view almost top to bottom.

2 Click on the Polygons button.

Holding the Shift key, left click every other polygon section in the top view. This should select the top and bottom polygons also.

3 Go to the Multiply tab and click on Bevel.

4 Hit the "n" key on the keyboard to bring up the Numeric:Bevel properties and apply the settings shown below.

5 Click the Polygons button again. While holding down the Shift key drag your mouse back and forth over the top view to select all polygons. Your top view should be similar to the screenshot below.

6 Go to the Modify tab and click on Stretch. With your mouse inside the column in the top view drag to make the column smaller in diameter.

7 Go the to Create tab and click on box.

8 In the top view while holding the Ctrl key drag out a box shape.

Go the to front view and click just above the box line to get something similar to below. You'll probably have to drag the box to the top of the column.

9 Select the Polygons button. Hold the Shift key and drag your mouse over the box until all the box polygons are selected.

Hold the Crtl key and hit the "c" key. The Clone dialog opens. Click ok.

10 Go to the Modify tab and click on Move. Drag the cloned box down to the bottom of the column.

11 You should now have a nice column ready to texture and use.

12 Below is an example of some quickly textured columns.

Have fun!
