Comic Book Style Colored Pencil Drawing - Sketching Tutorial
Jacquelin Vanderwood July 15, 2004 | 1 | | I created a simple line sketch with an ordinary lead pencil. I then laid in one color a piece for each area using Prismacolor pencils. The sky and eyes are Light Cerulean Blue, the hair is Burnt Ochre, the skin is Salmon Pink, the main clothing area is Bronze, the bars on the clothing are Cool Gray 30%, the lips are Henna, the pupils are Indigo Blue, and the clouds are French Gray 30%. | | 2 | | Then I went back to the sky with Light Cerulean Blue and used a crosshatch method to fill it in better always mindful to used a sharp point on the pencil. I also did the same stroke to the clouds. Then I selected the pencil I used for the clothing and outlined the the clothing with the pencil. I also did the same thing for the skin but added some shadows into the skin. | | 3 | | I added crosshatching to the clothing, and also outlined the bars on the shoulders. Next I outlined the hair areas and also crosshatched those areas and added shading. I did the same to the lips and again added shading. The pupils of the eyes were filled in and then outlined with Cool Gray 30%. | | 4 | | In this step I used the blue of the sky and added shadow to the character. I then used a very sharp Cool Gray 30% pencil and outlined everything. This is the completed sketch or drawing. (The actual colors are more brilliant than are being portrayed, however, with the use of Photoshop I can simulate it as near as possible for this lesson.) | Copyright 1998-2004, Jacquelin Vanderwood, All Rights Reserved | |
