Computer Drawing Lines on Drawings Sketching/Adobe Illustrator Tutorial
Jacquelin Vanderwood

August 15, 2004

It's true, not everyone is as skilled as they would like to be at hand drawing the lines on a sketch. So instead of doing it by hand, you can use Illustrator to accomplish it. After you have drawn your sketch, scan it into Photoshop. Fix it, save it, whatever it needs. Open Illustrator. Now use Open to go and find the sketch.

Create a new layer. Name it lines. Lock the original.

Here's the sketch I'll be working on.

Our tool of choice will be the Pen tool.

Hide the foreground color. We'll work in black. If you have the Caps Lock on you will not see the Pen tool cursor.

Let's start with the eye. I used the Pen tool to draw a selection around the eyelash area. Use the Alt key to make a corner.

Now use the selection a foreground color which will fill it. Don't forget to make black the outline color again.

Next I traced around the lower and side sections of the eye. Once that is done, change the selection to a foreground color.

When drawing around the eye, to move points around, hold down the Alt key. This changes the direction you want your line to follow. This is the proper way to use the Pen tool. Continue working on the eye.

Use the Ellipse tool to draw the pupil. Put the tool in center, hold down the Alt key and draw.

Continue using the Ellipse tool and draw two outlined circles.

With both circles selected, open Path and select Outline Stroke.

This makes them filled objects.

Select all of the lines.

Click on Add to shape area.

Now the eye is one object.

The eyebrows are easy to draw so go ahead and do it.

For the side of the face, draw one line. Use the Alt key to turn the points in the right direction. Also, you can shrink the size of the point line where necessary.

Draw the outline of the hair. Now draw the inner areas. Make the foreground color white. Use Subtract and Expand to make the hair one piece. Enlarge the stroke size and use a rounded Cap and Join. For the area of the hair at the top, use the pen tool and draw in the appropriate lines. Make the foreground color white. With all of the hair selected, select Make Compound Path to make the hair one piece. You now have two pieces for the hair, the white part and the outlined part which is now a solid piece instead of an outline.

Use smaller lines such as .5 in the interior for more detail. Continue on until you finish the drawing. Create two white circles below the circles in the eye and move them below the black lines or onto a new layer below this layer. Once you are done, use Add to shape area to make the line layer one piece. You can change the white hair part to color. Create the color layer on a new layer below the black layer.
