I am starting with a pencil sketch as you should do.
In this step lay down the base colors. They may appear transparent but don't worry about that.
In this step take white and mix with the same colors that you painted with before then make highlight areas. In the reverse, for the shadow areas add black to the color. Use water lightly to blend between the edges of the colors. At this point let the painting dry completely. Or if you want to add even more to the piece, continue on.
Use a small nib pen and black ink and begin to outline the artwork. You can have broken lines in this illustration and also the lines are loose and do not adhere absolutely around the item being outlined.
