As you know you first make a light pencil sketch of the outline of the bird. Using Derwent watercolor pencils I used Copper Beach to fill in the brown areas of the bird. I changed to Deep Cadmium for the belly area. Ivory Black was used in the eye, part of the wing, and the legs.
At this point I used clear water and soft pointed paintbrush and turned the pencil into watercolor.
I went back to the watercolor pencils using Ivory Black, Deep Vermillion, Imperial Purple, and Prussian Blue, and drew in some more areas that I want to apply water.
In this step I sparingly used water, an almost dry brush, on the penciled area.
For the final step, I waited until the piece was completely dry then used a small tipped nib and Permanent India Ink and created more detail on the bird.
