The Lady Snail - Corel Paint Shop Pro Tutorial

Right click, copy and paste as a new image The Lady Snail Color Palette below, this will make it easier to switch between colors. Since this is a Selections tutorial, from this point on you will flood fill each selection with black, then Contract by 1 and fill with a color unless otherwise stated.
Open a new image 530 x 440 Transparent. Add a new layer, name it Leaf, and load the lady_snail_leaf.sel. Flood with Black, Contract by 1 and fill with the first green on the Color Palette. Go to Selections>Float and apply a Cutout with these settings: Color: Black - Horizontal and Vertical:0 - Opacity:58% and Blur:30. Apply Noise:3%. Deselect. Add a new layer: Leaf_Lites and switch to the center green color, Air Brush Round - Size 25 - Hardness:25 - Opacity:46 Step:24 and Density:40 and paint highlights on your Leaf using image as a guide. Switch to the darker green and paint a shading line down the center of your Leaf. Apply Gaussian Blur: 2%. Switch to your Draw Tool, Bezier Curve, Width: 1, Black and background color null. and draw a line from the end of the leaf to the tip. This will be the center of your leaf. Adjust the line to your satisfaction. While you still have your Draw Tool, switch to Freehand Line, and draw a few accent lines. Use the finished image as a guide. Save your work as Lady_Snail in PSP format.
Add a new layer and name it Hat. Change your background color to the first blue in the Hat Palette, foreground Black. Load the lady_snail_hat.sel, fill with Black, contract by 1 and fill with blue. Selections - Float and apply the Cutout except change the Blur to 20. Deselect. Still on the same layer, switch the background color to the second blue color, load the lady_snail_hat_brim.sel and fill with Black, contract by 1 and fill with blue. Float, apply the Cutout, change Blur to 30, add Noise, deselect and Control S to save. | | 
| New layer: Body and load the lady_snail_body.sel, fill with black, contract by one and fill with the first tan color on the Snail Palette, float, apply Cutout and Noise. While still selected add a new layer: Body_Lites, change color to the last tan color and add a highlight along the neck. Apply a Gaussian Blur of 2 and deselect.
Add another layer: Head and load the lady_snail_head.sel, fill with black, contract by 1 and fill with tan, float, Cutout and add noise. Deselect. Using your Draw Tool, draw a line across top of head to show hat edge. Control S. | | | Add a new layer: Eyes and load the lady_snail_left_eye.sel. Fill with black, contract by 1 and fill with second blue color on the Flower Palette. Float, Cutout, change the Blur to 20 and add Noise. Move this eye slightly above top of head. Duplicate this layer, mirror, and move right eye slightly overlapping left eye.
Add a new layer: Pupil and load the lady_snail_pupil.sel, flood fill with black and deselect. Duplicate this layer, mirror and move right pupil over right eye, Control S.
New layer: Shell and load the lady_snail_shell.sel, fill with black, contract by 1 and fill with the second tan color of the Shell Palette, float, add cutout and noise. While still selected, add a layer, change to your Air Brush, switch to the third dark tan color and paint on shadows for the shell. Use image as a guide. Apply Gaussian Blur at 3. New layer: Shell_Shadow. Pull this layer below the shell and using the dark tan, paint shadows under the rim of the shell, along the neck, too. Apply Gaussian Blur. Control S to save.
Go to the top of your layer palette, click on the copy of pupil and add a new layer: Smile and load the lady_snail_smile, fill with black and deselect.
New layer: Flower and load the lady_snail_flower, fill with black, contract by 1 and fill with the first blue in the Flower Palette. Float, cutout. Load lady_snail_flower_center, fill with black, contract and fill with the dark orange, while still selected use your Air Brush and the light orange color and paint a center, Gaussian Blur and deselect. Control S to save.
Using your Draw Tool, Black, Bezier Curve, Width:1, paint a stem from the flower to the edge of the hat as shown in the image. You can add a new layer here if you'd like for the Stem. | | | Let's add some highlights to the eyes by adding a new layer: Eye_Lites. Paint Brush - Round - Size:5 - second blue color on Flower Palette, paint in two dots on blue portion of eye, this won't be very bright, then change to white and Size:2 and dot the pupils.
I added another layer and using the same blue and Air Brush, painted on some highlights on the flower, then applied Gaussian Blur of 1. One more layer for the Blush, Paint Brush set at 35 and using the orange color paint in two cheek spots, apply a Gaussian Blur of 5. One layer for the Brows drawn in with the Draw Tool. Final layer: Bow. Load the lady_snail_bow1.sel and fill with black, contract and fill with the first blue color. New layer and move this one under the hat layer, load the lady_snail_bow2.sel, copy this, paste as a new layer and mirror, line it up next to, or slightly to the right of, the first Bow loop, deselect and move this layer down under the hat. Load the lady_snail_bow3.sel and fill, contract, fill and deselect. | | | At this point you are finished with The Lady Snail so save one more time in PSP format, Shift D to duplicate the image and save in your favorite format.
