The Ferris Wheel Tutorial - Corel Paint Shop Pro Tutorial

Donnamarie J. Walker

1. Let's start by opening a new image, 500 x 500, Transparent. Flood fill with white so we can see our work as we go. You can delete this layer or flood fill with another color after you finish
your Ferris Wheel. Copy and paste the Color Palette as a new image. You will use your dropper tool to select the colors as we go. Your Stroke color will remain Black throughout this tutorial.

2. Spokes: Select your Preset Shapes-Rectangle-Stroked & Filled-Width:1 Stroke color Black Fill Color Red. We are going to make the first Spoke. Set your cursor at 249-239 and draw up a thin Rectangle 4 x 182. Watch your number on the bottom left tool bar. Add a new layer, switch your Preset to Circle, Fill Color Orange. Draw a circle at the top of the Spoke to 11 x 11. Move to top of Spoke, centering it. Turn off Layer 1 and Merge Visible. You now have your first Spoke for the Ferris Wheel. Leave Layer 1 turned off for the next steps.

3. Let's make the other Spokes. Duplicate this layer, flip Horizontally. Merge these layers visible. Duplicate this layer, Rotate right 90 degrees, Merge Visible. Duplicate one more time, Rotate right 22 degrees, Merge Visible. Resize layer by 95%, center on canvas, Sharpen. Rename this layer "Spokes". Your Spokes should look like the example below. At this point it would be a good idea to save your work in PSP format, naming it Ferris Wheel. You can use Control S to save from now on. Save your work after you complete each step.

4. Struts: Now we will make the Struts. Using your Draw Tool-Single Line-Stroke-Width:2 Color: Black start at center 250 x 250 and draw out a line to the right to 429. Using Spokes as a guide, draw sides and bottom of strut as shown in Examples #1 & #2, top and center.

Draw inner bars of struts as shown in Example #3. Zoom in so you can see for better placement of the inner struts. When you are satisfied with your strut, you can now move it so it sets on the Spoke as shown in Example #3. Hit Control S to save your work.

5. Turn off all layers except the Strut layer. We are going to duplicate as we did the Spokes. Duplicate this layer, Mirror, Flip. Turn on the Spokes layer and using it as a guide, adjust the second Strut as shown in Example #4 below. When satisfied, turn off other layers and Merge Visible. Control S to save.

Strut Example #4

6. Duplicate this layer, Rotate 90 degrees, make any adjustments using Spokes as a guide. Turn off all layers except the 2 Strut layers, Merge Visible. Duplicate Merged layer, Rotate right 45 degrees, adjust. Duplicate Merged layer again, Rotate right 22 degrees, adjust. Duplicate Merged layer one more time, Rotate left 23 degrees, adjust. Turn off Layer 1 and Spokes layer, merge the strut layers visible. Sharpen. Your image should look like Example #5. If not, use your Undo button until it does. Move this layer under the Spokes layer. Use Control S to save your work. Rename this layer "Struts".

Strut Example #5

7. Outer Circle: Add a new layer. Using your Preset Circle-Filled-Color: Black start at the center of your Spokes and draw out a circle to 335. Select All-Float-Selections Modify-Contract by 1. Flood fill with Red. Modify-Contract by 8. Flood fill with Black. Modify-Contract by 1. Delete, deselect. Move layer beneath Struts layer as shown in Example #6. Name this layer "Outer Circle" and Control S to save your work.

Outer Circle Example #6

8. Inner Circle: Add a new layer. Using your Preset Circle-Filled-Color: Black start at the center of your Spokes again and draw out a circle to 295. Select All-Float. Modify-Contract by 1. Flood fill with Orange. Modify-Contract by 15. Flood fill with Black. Modify-Contract by 1. Delete, deselect. Resize by 95%. Sharpen. Your image should look like Example #7. Name this layer "Inner Circle", move it under the Struts later, and Control S to save your work. You might like to take a break here, stretch, whatever before we move on. You're doing great!

Inner Circle Example #7

9. Inner Black Circles: Add a new layer. Using your Preset Circle-Stroked Width:2 Color: Black starting at center of Spokes, draw out three circles in these sizes: Smallest Circle: 71 - Middle Circle: 95 - Largest Circle: 117. Name this layer "Inner Black Circles, move below Struts layer, and Control S to save your work.

Inner Black Circles Example

10. Frame: Add a new layer. Using your Preset Circle-Stroked & Filled-Width: 1 Stroke Color: Black-Fill Color: Red. Starting at center of Spokes draw out a circle to 33. Add a new layer, switch your Preset to Rectangle, and starting at 240 x 240, draw out a rectangle pulling downward to 16 x 30. Move this layer under the Circle, turn off all other layers and Merge Visible. Zoom in and using Red paint out all the black line as shown in Example #8.

Example #8

11. Add a new layer. Using your Preset Circle again, switch the Fill Color to Orange and draw out a small circle, then switch to Rectangle and draw a small shape over the circle as shown in Example #9. Add a new layer and still using your Rectangle, draw out a long rectangle shape staring at 240 and pull out to 16 x 220. Move this layer beneath the red circle layer, turn off all other layers, and Merge Visible. Using your Paint Tool, paint in three small dots and a triangle shape as shown in the example below. Control S to save your work.

12. Add a new layer. We are going to make the Triangle Shapes as shown. Using your Preset Shape-Triangle-Filled-Color: Black draw out a small Triangle as shown in Example #10 below. Copy, paste as a new selection, flip. Make a new layer for the small side triangles, draw out a triangle as shown in Example #11 below, Rotate 90 degrees, copy, paste as a new selection, mirror, and adjust. Turn off all layers except the two Triangle layers and Merge Visible. Copy and paste as a new selection three times so your image looks like the one on the right. Turn on the Frame layer and Merge Visible. Your finished Frame should look like Example #11. Control S to save your work.

Example #9         Example #10       Example #11

13. Duplicate Frame layer, Rotate left 30 degrees, Sharpen. Duplicate Frame layer again, Rotate right 30 degrees, Sharpen. Move both of these layers under the center Frame layer.

14. Because our left and right frames are shorter than the center one, we'll add what we need by selecting our Preset Rectangle-Stroked & Filled-Width:1-Stroke Color: Black-Fill Color: Orange-Vector checked. Draw out a Rectangle 16 x 30. Holding down the Shift Key, adjust the side nodes until the Rectangle looks similar to Example #12. Make sure the Frame leg is now as long as the center leg. When satisfied, Convert Layer to Raster, copy and paste as a new selection, mirror and adjust to right leg. Turn off all layers except the Frames and the added pieces, Merge Visible, Rename layer to "Frame" and Control S to save your work.

Example #12

15. Seats: Almost done! Add a new layer and using your Rectangle Preset, switch the Fill color to Lime Green, the one under the Red square on the Color Palette, draw out a small Rectangle 10 x 30. Use the Deformation Tool, hold down the Control Key and push in the bottom nodes a little as shown in Example #13.

Example #13

16. Add a new layer and using your Star1 Preset, Fill Color: Purple, draw out a small Star. It needs to be as wide as the Rectangle shape. Move this layer under the Rectangle and erase any portions of the Star that are showing above and on the sides of the Rectangle, we only want the bottom portion of the Star to show. Adjust as needed. Add one more layer and using your Draw Tool-Single Line-Stroke-Width: 2 and Color: Black, draw the hanger portion of the seat. Now turn off all other layers except these three and Merge Visible. Your work should look like Example #14. Rename this layer "Seats" and Control S to save your work.

Example #14

17. Copy. Turn on Struts layer and using it as a guide, paste the Seat as a new selection and adjust as shown in Example #15. Continue to paste until you've added all your seats. Once again, after you are satisfied with their placement, move this layer under the Spokes layer and Control S to save your work.

Example #15

At this time you can Shift D to duplicate your work, close the original and finish working on your Ferris Wheel by merging the Ferris Wheel layers and adding layers for a sky, grasses and background. I try not to work off the original just in case I mess up and because sometimes you want to redo parts at a later time or add something new so having all the original layers intact is very useful. I do it for all of my work. You can add highlights to your Seats using the last two and a half Color Squares on the Palette.

I hope you've enjoyed this tutorial and will try other tutorials to add to your Prestigious Park!
