Red Princess - Corel Paint Shop Pro 6 Tutorial
| Donnamarie J. Walker February 16, 2002 | 1 | | This is a Paint Shop Pro tutorial for Advanced Users with Vector experience. This tutorial was written using PSP 6. There are a lot of screen shots to help you through so take your time, save often, and enjoy yourself! We will be working with Black as the Foreground, or Stroke, color and the colors in the palette as the Background, or Fill, color. We will use Vectors unless otherwise specified. We will also be naming our layers as we go because it is helpful to do so from the start. That way you know where everything is simply by looking at the Layer Palette. You will also have to adjust the Nodes on the Vector Shapes to get rounded edges or curves and I used Cusp, Curve Before, Curve After and Symmetric. If one setting doesn't achieve the result you need, undo and try another setting but mainly I used Cusp. Also, the sizes written for the shapes are just approximates. If something seems too wide or too large, adjust smaller, you can always stretch it larger when editing. | | 2 | | First, you can right click, copy and paste as a new image The Red Princess Color Palette, use the HTML codes provided, or use your own colors. Open a new image, 400 x 750, Transparent. Click on Layer 1 and change the name to fill, flood fill with white. This is so you can better see your work. You can delete this layer at the end of the tutorial if you so choose. Select your Preset Shapes, Anti-alias and Create as a Vector checked, Ellipse, Stroke: Black, Fill: #4C4C4C or #1 in the Palette. Draw out an Ellipse approx. 160 x 225. Using the screen shot, shape the hair. When you are satisfied with it, convert the layer to Raster, rename it Hair1. This is the background hair, we will need to make another for the crown of her head later. Let's save here in PSP format and name your work The Red Princess.
| | 3 | | Change your Background color to #FBCD9C or #2 on the Palette. Draw out an Ellipse 95 x 100 and using the screen shot, click on Node Edit, shape accordingly. Promote to Raster, rename layer to Neck. Now to the Head. Draw out an Ellipse to 70 x 80, click on Node Edit and adjust the nodes so you can make an ear shape. I didn't make a screen shot of how I had the nodes but if you are an advanced user you should be able to do it with little problem. Add a node if you need to. The screen shot below should help you with the placement of her head. After you are happy with your adjustments, convert to Raster and rename Head. Control S to save.
| | 4 | | Draw out an Ellipse 30 x 70, click on Node Edit and use the screen shot to shape, adding two nodes at the bottom so you can make a finger. You don't have to worry about making the other fingers as they will be hidden behind her dress. Convert to Raster, rename Hand1. Let's do the other hand. Draw out an Ellipse approx. 43 x 41, click on Node Edit and use the screen shot to shape. This hand will be behind the Staff so we will add fingers later. Convert to Raster and rename Hand2. Save.
| | 5 | | Change your Background color to #9A0000 or #3 on the Palette, draw out an Ellipse, approx. 65 x 175, click on Node Edit and use the screen shot to shape the arm, changing nodes to Cusp or Symmetric as needed. Move the arm into place as shown below. Convert to Raster, rename Arm1. Draw out another Ellipse for the other arm and shape as shown below. Move into place, convert to Raster and rename Arm2.
| | 6 | | Change your Background color to #FF9934 or #8 on the Palette, switch your Preset Shape to Rectangle, and draw out a Rectangle 16 x 480. This is the Staff. Using the screen shot and the Hand2 layer as a guide, turn your rectangle so it appears to rest in her hand as shown below. It doesn't matter if the Staff appears too short to touch the ground, it will be behind her dress and not seen. But you can adjust as you see fit. When satisfied with its placement, convert to Raster, rename Staff1, and Control S to save.
| | 7 | | Let's take a break here and get up, stretch a bit, get a fresh cup of coffee and look over what you've done so far. Not bad, eh? Okay, let's put a Dress on this Lady. Ready? Change your Background color to #9A0000 or #3 on the Palette, change to Ellipse, draw out 100 x 512, go to Node Edit and pull the two side nodes down to the bottom node, pulling each out to the sides so we can make the bottom of her dress. Now add a node on each side of the middle bottom node about midway between the middle and end nodes. Push these two nodes up a bit, adjust the arrows to make the dress bottom curve as shown below. Also move the Dress over slightly to the right as shown, it is not centered on this image. Adjust the node on top to Cusp and pull out the arrows so the dress curves out and down as shown. Adjust the side nodes, Symmetric I think, and move the arrows so the dress curves in a bit going to the top, and out going down towards the bottom. When satisfied, convert to Raster and rename Dress.
| | 8 | | Now for the Bodice I actually remembered to do screen shots of the node editing and the images below are actual size. First, change your Preset Shape back to Rectangle, same color, and pull out a Rectangle 150 x 180. The first image shows where I added new nodes in red and moved them in and out. In the second image, I added more nodes, the ones in blue, and adjusted them. In the third image, I clicked on nodes and changed their setting to Curve Before or Curve After so I could get a more rounded effect. You'll have to experiment as you go. Both bottom corner nodes were changed to Symmetric in order to get the ends to round out properly. Convert to Raster and rename Bodice. If it's helpful to use a model, copy and paste the fourth image as a new image and work your Vector over the top of it. Turn down the opacity of the layer so you can see the model below, then convert to Raster when finished, copy and paste as a new layer on your working image.
| | 9 | | Let's add trim to the Bodice so switch your background color to #FDCDC9 or #4 on the Palette, change your Preset to Ellipse and draw out an ellipse 78 x 24. Adjust the top node to a point, one side to curve in slightly as shown, then turn the ellipse to fit the bottom of the Bodice. I duplicated and mirrored this layer after converting it to Raster, using the Deformation Tool to turn it slightly to fit the bottom, then applied the Sharpen effect. You could also just go ahead and draw a vector ellipse as we did with the first trim, it's up to you. You can merge these two layers and rename Bottom Trim.
| | 11 | | Let's add more to the Staff. Change your background color to #FFCC00 or #6 on the Palette, draw an Ellipse approx. 10 x 15. Using the screen shot adjust the nodes to curve in slightly at the top, curve out at the bottom as shown. Convert to Raster and rename Staff2. Switch your color to #FB9A39 or #8 on the Palette and draw out another Ellipse 60 x 16, shape by using the screen shot below. Convert to Raster when satisfied, rename Staff3, and Control S to save. Add a new layer: Staff_Globe and switch your background color to #6601C9 or #7 on the Palette. Change your Preset Shape to Circle, uncheck vector, and draw out a circle 53 x 53. Drag this layer below the two shape layers that you made above so the globe sits behind those as shown in the screen shot below. Change the color to #FECB00 or #6 on the Palette, go back to your Preset Shapes and change to Ellipse, Vector checked, and draw out an Ellipse 44 x 20. Using the screen shot below, push in the sides a bit and down on the top, use the handle to turn the shape so it sits on the globe. Convert to Raster, rename Staff4. Okay, one more piece to add to the Staff. Use your Preset Circle again, color #36D96E or #5 on the Palette, and draw out a small circle 23 x 23. Node edit and flatten the bottom of the circle as shown. Convert to Raster, rename Staff5 and Control S to save.
| | 12 | | Switch the background color to #FECC99 or #2 on the Palette and using your Ellipse shape, draw out a shape 30 x 35. This will be her fingers holding the staff. We will make just the basic hand, you can add fingers if you choose by drawing details on her hand. We want the shape to curve into "fingers" as shown below. Convert to Raster, rename Fingers.
| | 13 | | You're doing great and this is what your Red Princess should look like right about now. Preview is 40% of actual image size. We will be adding the front hair and crown next.
| | 14 | | On to the hair. Change your color to #504B48 or #1 on the Palette, draw out an Ellipse 64 x 34, using the handle to turn the hair slightly, then node edit as shown below so the front hair matches the shape of the back hair. Convert to Raster, rename Front Hair and Control S to save your work.
| | 15 | | The Crown is going to be slightly difficult so have patience when working with the node editing. I'll try to explain it as well as I can. Change your background color to #FF9934 or #8 on the Palette and using an Ellipse, draw out a shape 82 x 30. Using the screen shot below as a guide, turn the ellipse slightly to the right, add six nodes. I know this is a tight space to work in and you can see the nodes I've added in blue. I added a couple of nodes, adjusted them as points or curves on the crown, then added more until I had six. Some of the nodes were changed to Cusp, the top right was changed to Symmetric so it would keep a straight edge. Convert to Raster. I then added a new layer and used my Preset Circle, vector unchecked, draw out a small circle 7 x 7, copy. Move this circle to one of the crown tips, paste copied circle to other tips. Turn off all layers except these two and merge visible. Rename Crown. Duplicate this layer and drag it below the Hair layer, use your Deformation tool and push in the sides of the crown a bit as shown above. Control S to save. | | 16 | | Whew! We're getting there! Let's give her a Face. Add a new layer for the Face Details and using your Draw Tool, Stroked: Black, Size:1, vector unchecked, Straight Line, draw a line for the bottom of her eyes, use the examples below for placement. Switch to Bezier Curve and do the top of her eyes, her brows, lips and ear. Switch back to Straight Line and draw two short lines for her nostrils and one line across her lips to separate them. I then added another layer, switched to my Preset Shapes, Circle, Stroked: Black, Line Width:1 and drew out a small circle for her eye. This I copied and pasted to the other eye. Drag this layer under the Face Details layer. Using your Magic Wand, select the inside of both eye circles, expand by one, add a new layer and fill with #669933, or a color of your choice. Use your Paint Brush, Size:2 and dot on a pupil for each eye. Drag this layer under the eye circles. Go back to the Face Details layer and select the inside of her lips. Hold down your Shift key and keep selecting until the lips are surrounded with marching ants, contract by one, add a new layer and fill with #9A0002 or #3 on the Palette. Drag this layer under the Face Details layers and Control S to save your work. Your image should look similar to the third face image. If you are satisfied with your details, turn off all other layers and merge the details, eyes and lips layers and rename Face Details.
| | 17 | | At this point your basic Red Princess is finished. I'd like to show you how to add shadows and highlights to give her more depth but that's another tutorial! I did add one more thing and that was an earring for her ear on a separate layer with Black as the Stroke and #9A0000 or #3 as the fill. Save one more time then Shift D to duplicate, close the original, turn off Layer1, and merge your layers visible. Add a Drop Shadow on Horizontal and Vertical:1, Opacity:35, Blur:2.5, Color: Black. Fill Layer1 with color or texture. Merge layers flatten and save in your favorite format! | Copyright 2002, Donnamarie J. Walker, All Rights Reserved |
