Sketching Colors with Pencil and Chalk - Corel Painter 8 Tutorial

Jacquelin Vanderwood

 September 15, 2003

Let's start by selecting a photo to use as our clone source. In this demonstration I'll use a little sporster for our source.

Create a new layer.

Double-click on the layer and name it sketch.

Choose a medium dark gray for the sketch layer.

Now click on Pencils and select the 2B Pencil.

Set the pencil size to 2.9 and opacity to 100.

Choose the Rotate tool to adjust the picture so you can draw more naturally. In the layer click the eye which will semi-hide the picture so that it is easier to see your strokes as you draw. Use the Eraser tool when necessary.

Use the Straight Line Strokes feature to sketch out the outline of the body of the car. Select Erasers>Eraser and tap the ] key to enlarge the eraser. Erase the lines that have crossed over the wheels. When you are done with that then change over to the Freehand Stroke to the left.

Here is the sketch we have so far. Hit the Clone selection again then go back to this one we have been drawing on and hide the car 100%. Now we are ready to color our sketch.

To color our sketch we want to first create a new layer. At this point we don't want to clone color but only to use the original picture as a reference. Go ahead and select Pastels and choose Square Hard Pastel 25. For texture we'll use the paper Sketchbook Paper.

Use the [ and ] to change the size of the pastel stick. Switch between Freehand stroke and Straight Line strokes to accomplish the look and feel. From this point just continue filling in the sketch. Put the shadow on a separate layer, then if you like, put the sketch layer on top.

Select the Blender tool and Round Blender Brush 20 and blend in areas of the car.

Create a new layer above the colored car layer. Choose Chalk and Square Chalk. Select the paper texture, Simulated Wood Grain. Reduce the opacity of the chalk to 18%. At this point we just want to lightly rough in some texture areas of the car to give it more character. Lighten the Sketch layer to 50%. Below is our finished artwork. (Note: This type of artwork is great for children's books.)
