This tutorial covers the process of settings up mask for use with the Airbrush. We will be creating a doll's head.
To start you'll want to select the Pen tool and draw the shape below. To create a corner as you can see at the bangs, click on the point after drawing it and it turns into a corner point. Use the Shape Selection tool to manipulate the points.

When you have completed the drawing of the hair, double-click on the layer and name it.

The next step in the process is to Convert To Selection.

Let's apply Feather to it.

And then save it as a selection (Save Selection).

Now we can open Channels and see that we have the selection saved.

Because we can't see anything if we try to draw the face now, we'll Load Selection of the hair and paint that in with the Digital Airbrush brush making sure we are working on a new layer.

I blocked in the base color of dark brown here before proceeding onto making the face.

Follow the procedure used above to create a new selection for the face. Lightly paint in the face leaving a soft edge in the front.

Use Oval Selection tool to create the oval for the eye and then select the Selection Adjuster and press the Control key to rotate it. Feather it one pixel and follow the procedures above.

Duplicate that selection layer.

So now the basic shapes are done.

So then let's load the face selection and make sure we're on the face layer. Change brushes to Soft Airbrush 50 and lower the opacity to 5% and paint in a shadow with a slightly darker version of the pink.

Using the same airbrush, to increase and decrease the brush size, use the [ and ]. Make each selection and make sure you are on the right layer. Use the airbrush to create shadows and highlights with color similar to the selection.
