In this tutorial I'll show you one way to paint a pet portrait using a clone brush. Tutorial Includes project files.
Here's the picture I'll use care of Photos.com.

The first thing we need to do is use Quick Clone.

The photo will then look faded as shown below.

The two squares, one white and one black is the Tracing Paper feature. To see your painting without a background you click on and off of this as you like.

Before you begin, save the clone as a RIFF file uncompressed.

At this point I'll select Watercolor Wash Cloner.

Opacity will be set to 10% so that it doesn't become too dark.

Zoom in to see close up and paint going over everything once. Click off Tracing Paper to see what it looks like. It should resemble the piece below.

With Tracing Paper off, we can now see where we need to make fixes. Gently paint over the areas that are missing paint and look splotchy. You may need to do this two or three times depending on the amount of color depth you prefer.

This is what we have so far.

Zoom in and try to paint in the areas that are lighter than they should be.

Reduce the size of the brush and fill in as much as you can. Here is the finished piece.
