In this tutorial I help you to understand paper texture and how it works.
Below at the top left you'll find the paper texture box.

If we click on that box we can see a wide variety of papers to choose from.

Click on the little arrow and select Launch Palette.

We are presented with a box that allows us to manipulate paper and invert it as well.

We can increase or decrease the size of the pattern as well as the contrast and brightness.

Select Chalk>Dull Grainy Chalk 10. Using Small Dots paper, let's increase the size to 150%. Paint in the shirt to see the results.

Hit the Invert button and change colors, then paint and notice how it paints in between the texture.

You can also increase and decrease the graininess by adjusting Grain amount.

We can also try other brushes. In the instance, I changed to a Digital Watercolor Dry Brush. Notice the grainy texture it allowed me to create. There are a lot of possibilities so have fun.
