In this tutorial I would like to teach you how to make an old mission building using the freehand method.
Let's start with the Pen tool and create the shape of the entire building.

With the Pen tool still selected, choose Convert to Selection under Shapes.

Create a new layer.

Let's use the Smart Stroke Brushes and select Chalk Textured.

Click on Straight Line Strokes.

Using a light sunny color, make the delineation of the right side of the building with the straight line. Then click on Freehand Strokes next to Straight Lines Strokes to finish the side.

For more authenticity, I left a portion of the building unpainted so that it would look like it was cracked. I also like this brush because it gives the effect of texture on adobe.

Changing to a darker version of the same color, I used the Straight Line Strokes again and created the left side of the building, using this feature more than I did on the other side.

Using the Pen tool again, draw out the shape of the shadow for the left side and then fill with a darker color.

For window openings on the right side of the building we can use the Pen tool and draw out the rectangle then use the Paintbrush tool and select the color from the shaded side of the building using the Straight Line Strokes features to keep the painting of the shadow straight.

Continuing to use the Pen tool and making them selections, add shadows and paint in the selections.

Reduce the size of the brush, using the Straight Line Strokes option, create the cross on top.

Using the Burn tool, add in some darker areas. Set it to about 4% opacity.

Finally, use the Magic Wand, select outside of the mission, do an Invert, then apply the Sharpen filter.

Here is the finished mission.
