You Can Paint a Monster - Painter X  Tutorial
Jacquelin Vanderwood

April, 2008

In this tutorial I'll show you how to paint a monster starting with the Pen tool.

The first step is to create a new layer then select the Pen tool. Draw out any shape that you want for a monster making sure to close the end and beginning so there are no gaps. To make the selection active like it is below, choose Shapes and then select Convert to Selection.

Select black and use Control+F to fill the selection. Control+D to deselect.

Use the Pen tool to create the interior of the mouth. For a brush use Smart Stroke Brushes>Pastel Tapered. Select a fairly dark color and paint in the mouth.

With a fairly small brush size and a lighter color, paint around the edge of the mouth. Paint the tongue with the same color then change to a darker color to give shadow to the back of it. For highlight, change to a lighter color and paint.

Create a new selection area using the Pen tool. Change to Art Pen Brushes>Worn Oil Pastel. On the layers palette, check Preserve Transparency so as not to go outside of the main body of the monster. Lower the Opacity a lot, something like 9%. Start with a dark color and paint. Lighten the color and reduce the brush size and paint in more definition. Then add another lighter color with an even smaller brush.

Make a selection area on the tail and follow the same procedure as we did for the main body.

Make a thin selection area around the mouth and paint.

Without any selection made, choose a brown color and a smaller brush and paint around the beast.

Make smaller selection and convert them always making sure you then click on the body layer of the monster before you paint. Also, make some white highlights on the eye area and the tongue.

Select a Blender brush such as Soft Blender Stump 20. You can reduce the size. Blend in rough areas but be careful not ot overdo it.

Uncheck Preserve Transparency. Using the same Blender brush drag out areas for detail. Change to the Chalk brush such as Dull Grainy Chalk 20 and reduce the size. Select a light yellow and add detail. We now have a gruesome monster.
