Doodling 101 or Getting to know more about Painter 6 Tutorial
by Jacquelin Vanderwood | Painter 6 is truly an AWESOME PROGRAM , I use the program in Windows 2000 and it works beautifully. There is so many new items that there is no way to cover all of them in one lesson, but I'll use this tutorial as an extremely brief introduction to Painter 6. Painter 6 takes time getting used to and once you locate everything, you're amazed at the varieties of tools at your fingertips. Doodling around with it will be a great learning tool. There is no other artistic tool out on the market today of this magnitude with such pure creative freedom. The only other tool that I can think of that has such variety of tool is Adobe After Effects used for motion graphics. | | | | | | 1 | | I have begun this lesson by opening up a 400 x 400 screen with a orange background. | | 2 | | Here I've applied a generic lighting scheme, it's the first one there when you open up Apply Lighting. | | 3 | | Here I've chosen a Pattern, then applied a Surface Texture using 3D Brush Strokes. As you can see in the Preview window, this will apply the texture you've selected to the existing layer that is selected. | | 4 | | Next I've chosen Painter's existing images from the Image Portfolio to drag onto the canvas. It would take to much time to create excellent artwork for this lesson as I'm really trying to walk you through some of the different features available in Painter 6. That will come in a future tutorial. | | 5 | | Below are examples of the Objects and Brushes palette along with Colors and Brush Controls. I've chosen Impasto Pattern Pen from Brushes along with Pixel Airbrush from General and have applied that to the artwork. | | 6 | | From Impasto I've selected Fiber along with General's Palette Knife. You can see the result. I've changed colors to give variety. I've also selected Brush Controls>General>Dab Type>Palette Knife and Stroke Type>Single along with Impasto>Draw To>Color Depth and Depth Method>Uniform. | | 7 | | Under Brush Controls I've selected Dab Type>Projected and enlarged the size of the brush under Size along with Impasto>Draw To>Color and Depth. Makes interesting 3D shapes. | | 8 | | In Brush Controls under General I've selected Dab Type>Circular, Stroke Type>Single, Method>Eraser, and Subcategory>Soft Paper Color along with the Impasto>Depth & Color Eraser brush. | | 9 | | I've selected Brushes>Impasto>Acid Etch along with the Relief Brush and Horizontal Crease to create this broken shell effect on the white circles. | | |
| | | | | | 10 | | In the first picture I chose Impasto>Smeary Varnish then proceeded onto Brushes>FX>Fairy Dust and applied that. Next I made the eye using the Circle from the Toolbox and applied a 3D Brush Stroke Surface Texture to that to give depth. I then adjusted the appearance in Impasto Lighting. And there you have it, some power doodling in the new Painter 6. By the way, another new feature under Dynamic Text is the ability to bend text. Pretty Cool, huh? There are a myriad of features, new and old, in Painter 6, to many to mention. You'll get really dramatic results for sure. If you're already a pro at Painter 5.5, you'll truly be impressed by this new version, I guar-an-tee! | | Copyright 1999 Jacquelin Vanderwood, All rights reserved | |
