Sometimes when designing, you want to focus on one part of your image. A good way to do that is to select that part of the image you want to focus on, and make the rest of it black a white.
Take this picture of a sunflower.
First, you will want to take your lasso tool, and select around the area of the sunflower.
Next, you want to select the inverse of it, so that everything but the flower is selected.
Then, you will desaturate your selected area.
Go back, and select inverse again, so that your sunflower is selected again. You may adjust the images color, contrast and brightness to your liking.
And you're done!! See how well your image is focused on?
