In this tutorial I created a character in Illustrator and then brought it over into Photoshop to shade it.
Here's the little character I created in Illustrator and used Live Paint to color in the sections. I saved it out as an Illustrator file and then when in Photoshop, created a new layer below it and filled it with white, otherwise it was transparent in the background.

I select the Burn tool set at the Range of Midtones.

I begun to shade the lid areas as well as the nose and mouth areas to give them more depth.

Continue on around the character using the Burn tool. You can increase and decrease the size of the brush depending on the area you are working on.

Change the Burn tool to Shadow and make some extra color on the cheeks.

Use the Dodge tool set to Shadows to create highlights in the piece and detail.

You can change back and forth between the Dodge and Burn tool to create depth.

Control and click the layer to select the character. Apply Equalize to the piece to clean up colors.

Choose the selected areas only. Now we can call it finished. You can now take it into After Effects and animate it.
